PUTTING IT INTO PRACTICE
Mechanical Efficiency: a worked example
The values below are an illustrative example, not a recommendation. Replace them with measurements or assumptions that match your question.
| Input | Example value |
|---|---|
| Useful output energy (J) | 800 |
| Input energy (J) | 1,000 |
| Result | 80 % |
- Check the input labels and enter the example values above.
- Apply the relationship: Efficiency (%) = useful output/input × 100.
- The result is 80 %, rounded for display.
How to interpret your result
Both energy quantities must describe the same system boundary and operating interval.
Distinguish net force from individual forces and specify the direction of displacement. Work can be negative. Force multiplication does not create extra energy because motion distance and losses also matter.
Frequently asked questions
Is mechanical advantage the same as efficiency?
No. Mechanical advantage compares forces; efficiency compares useful output energy or power with the corresponding input.
When is the mechanical efficiency calculator useful?
Unaccounted heat or other energy transfers lower useful efficiency without violating conservation of energy.
How do I use the mechanical efficiency calculator?
Enter useful output energy (j), input energy (j). The result updates automatically. Use the units shown beside each input; the example values illustrate the method.
Which formula does this calculator use?
Efficiency (%) = useful output/input × 100.
What should I check before using the result?
Both energy quantities must describe the same system boundary and operating interval.
How are results rounded?
Scalar numbers display up to six decimal places, with scientific notation for very large or small values. Text, fraction, date and schedule outputs use the format described on the tool. Intermediate calculations use JavaScript floating-point arithmetic. Keep sensible precision for your measurements.
